Yes, two Buddhist countries are fighting over disputed land- the disputed land centers around, of all things, a temple (Preah Vihear Temple). The BKK Post reports two people were killed in over 2 hours of fighting yesterday with both sides blaming the other for starting the fighting.
The fighting included artillery exchanges and reports state an entire village on the Thai side of the border was destroyed.
This is a first for me- living in a country engaging in a border war.
In the coming days we will, hopefully, find out if the fighting is over the land or deeper political issues.

About faranginbangkok
I began working in Bangkok during 2008- a time that featured a great deal of political unrest in Thailand and particularly Bangkok.
I had lived in San Francisco for 15 years and was working on a project in Thailand. Generally, I spent 2 weeks in Bangkok and then 3-4 weeks in San Francisco. Did Bangkok begin to feel like home? Yes, and No. Bangkok and the Thai culture forced me to feel many things, the change in culture and environment was so dramatic it forced the decision- embrace or ignore.
I embraced and made Bangkok my home and base in 2009. I have enjoyed living in Bangkok, experiencing Thailand and the entire ASEAN region. I moved to Singapore in 2016...fallen behind on this blog since.
I understand your deep concern and your disappointment. When I was in Sri Lanka, a few years ago, I felt the same way. Some Buddhists I talked to were grlorifying the war against the Tamils in the name of a supposed “holy land” for the Dharma. It was very sad. I hope your country and Cambodia will stop this nonsense soon.
