Thailand & Cambodia- Plane Crash & Black Magic

Fortunately things have remained calm between Thailand and Cambodia. Unfortunately two Thai F-16’s crashed yesterday in a training exercise.

One thing I struggle to get used to in Thailand is talk of the supernatural- ghosts and spirits. It came up again yesterday after the crash of the planes, some speculated the cause of the crash was black magic used by Cambodia. I kid you not, from the BKK Post:

Two F16 jets were spotted last Thursday near the border in Si Sa Ket’s Kantharalak district where there have been clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops over the past two weeks.

The air force insisted the two jets were taking part in Cobra Gold but admitted they had flown too close to the border during the military drill.

The air force spokesman brushed off a rumour that there could be a supernatural cause of the crash. “Do not believe in this sort of thing. I can’t see how the crash could be related to that [black magic]. This is science: an engine problem perhaps, not superstition.”

Talk of black magic as a cause for a plane crash is certainly new for me- not something I expect to see in the morning paper.

I had lived in San Francisco for 15 years and was working on a project in Thailand. Generally I spent 2 weeks in Bangkok and then 3-4 weeks in San Francisco. Did Bangkok begin to feel like home? Yes, and No. Bangkok and the Thai culture forced me to feel many things, the change in culture and environment was so dramatic it forced the decision- embrace or ignore. I embraced and made Bangkok my home and base in 2009. I have enjoyed living in Bangkok, experiencing Thailand and the entire ASEAN region.

One Response to Thailand & Cambodia- Plane Crash & Black Magic

  1. Anthony Thary Naldo says:

Cambodia will not do such a thing but the question is why did the F-16 was flying in our airspace if did not fly into airspace it will not have crash and one more thing the place you flow into is a place protected by gods of CAMBODIA so don’t blame as for black magic because you were the one flying in our airspace!!!!!!!!
